When Someone Questions Christianity Based on Old Testament Passages

This devotion explains how to answer when someone uses Old Testament passages to challenge your faith in Scripture.

It’s popular to question biblical values by taking Old Testament laws and narratives out of context.

If someone tries to discredit God’s Word by bringing up Old Testament laws, remind them that Scripture is an unfolding story. It doesn’t contradict itself, but it moves mankind from law to grace (Galatians 3:23-24).

If a fellow believer has a sincere question about an Old Testament passage, do your homework and learn how to explain it (2 Timothy 2:15).

But what if someone uses an Old Testament passage to discredit our faith, claiming the Bible is simply written by men and is no longer relevant?

In that case, I recommend you tell them they’ll never understand the Old Testament until they understand the New Testament. Then, if they’ll listen, share the gospel. If they refuse to listen, they aren’t really interested in truth.

The things we need to know about God and His Word are easy enough for a child to understand. But that doesn’t mean we’ll fully understand every detail without careful study. And it doesn’t mean we’ll fully understand everything here on earth because we are finite beings serving an infinite God (1 Corinthians 13:12).

But let’s never forget: “This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: ‘I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go’” (Isaiah 48:17).

Without God's Word, we have no basis for genuine faith.
