God's "Rule" for Overcoming Worry

We can't overcome worry without applying the principle in Matthew 6:34. This 1-minute devotion explains.

"Worrying is carrying tomorrow's load with today's strength - carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn't empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” ― Corrie ten Boom

Matthew 6:34: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

This is a brilliant, God-anointed principle that we often forget when struggling with a problem.

It's a verse we should all have memorized. Then, when our situations seem overwhelming with no end in sight, we can recite it to calm our fears.

We aren't meant to handle a lifetime worth of problems each day. We aren't even meant to handle a week's worth of problems each day. But God promises to give us His strength to handle our problems one day at a time.

These verses show us how we renew our strength daily.

We can't overcome worry without applying the principle in Matthew 6:34. This 1-minute devotion explains.
✔ By putting our hope and trust in the Lord:

Isaiah 40:31: "Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

By praying about everything, no matter how small:

Philippians 4:6: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."

By remembering God's loving care.

1 Peter 5:7: "Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you."

  2. Oh, so true. Thank you for this reminder that our worry about tomorrow takes away what we can accomplish today in His name.

  3. Corrie use to tell a story that I read probably in the late 70's. She said that one day when she was waiting to board a train with her dad, she asked him if she could have her ticket in advance. Her dad wisely saw this as an opportunity to teach his daughter. He told her that her ticket was like God's Grace...that he would give it to her when she was about to board when she needed it.

  5. This is an older post, but has great meaning, perhaps more today with all that is happening in the World around us morally. Worry is an enemy worth fighting.

Where we attended collective worship in Cincinnati for many years, Bibles were provided to graduating Seniors from High School. I made it a point to highlight Matthew 6:34, with a message to each young man or woman about the importance of working hard to master this guidance, some might label as an imperative.

When you struggle with worry, it can only lead to more serious mental and physical issues. I know, because it happened to me. Thankfully, mine was an easily diagnosed chemical imbalance in the brain. Of course my fiends told me they did not need a medical diagnosis to tell them that...they already knew! A little humor, but worry can be incapacitating and lead to suicide.
