Simplicity in Christ

Second Corinthians 11:3 contains a phrase I love:

“But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve

by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the

simplicity that is in Christ.”

Instead of “simplicity,” some translations use the phrase “simplicity and purity of devotion” or “sincere and pure devotion”.

The meaning is simple and clear: our devotion to Christ is not meant to be self-seeking. It's meant to be genuine, pure, and uncomplicated, transparent, wholehearted, and marked by undivided loyalty to God.

This is such a comforting and encouraging truth—especially in today’s world, where many Christians tend to over-complicate their faith, falling into the same trap as Eve by listening to the lies of the “ancient serpent.”

Some professing Christians want more than simplicity. They want signs and wonders, special manifestations, angelic encounters, emotional highs, and supernatural experiences. Some people neglect God's Word but seek “words” from people who claim to be prophets.

Others focus on health, wealth, and success as if they are biblical promises.

But all these things can be distractions that draw us away from the simplicity that is in Christ. As a result, our relationship with God can become corrupted like Adam’s and Eve’s. 

The Christian focus is simple: living a sanctified life that pleases the Lord.

Let us live in that simplicity!
