Christ's Joy Is Very Different than Human Joy

When We're feeling low, discouraged, or sad, John 17:13 is an important verse to ponder!

After telling His disciples about His coming crucifixion (John 16), Jesus
prays aloud to God the Father, saying:

“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.” John 17:13

Christ isn't talking about worldly joy based on earthly circumstances.

When we fully realize what Christ has done for us, it brings unspeakable joy. It's a joy that changes our thinking about worldly hardships. It's joy in our salvation. It's joy in reading His Word. It's joy in knowing we will one day spend eternity with Him.

In John 15:11, after describing Himself as our vine, Jesus says something similar: “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”

Understanding our connection with Christ brings both joy and peace in difficulties: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33

It's easy to get focused on our troubles and lose Christ's peace and joy.

If you're feeling that way today, I encourage you to pause throughout your day and remember all that Christ has done and all that He is going to do. Don't let worldly problems steal your peace and joy.
