We Need It: A Conscience

Everyone is given one. Some people develop it and some people destroy it. This 1-minute devotion explains.

Everyone, saved and unsaved has a conscience, an inborn sense of right and wrong demonstrating "that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right" (Romans 2:14-15).

But men are experts at "suppressing" the truth and losing all "sense of shame" for their sins (Romans 1:18-32; 1 Timothy 4:1-2; Ephesians 4:19).

It starts when we ignore a "twinge of conscience" - a warning that we're headed in the wrong direction. Each time we ignore this reminder, it becomes easier to ignore the next one. Eventually, we don’t even recognize the warnings. You might say our conscience "gets hacked" and no longer works properly.

Today let's prayerfully consider if we've been violating our conscience instead of taking God's "way out":

"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it." 1 Corinthians 10:13

Another way we lose our conscience is by gradually accepting the false values of our culture. We rarely accept a completely false belief, but we are easily taken in by half-truths.
