Why Babies Go to Heaven

Many people ask this question thinking Scripture has no answer. But it does! This 1-minute devotion explains.

Answering questions with Scripture...

The “age of accountability” is different for each person, but God does not hold infants and young children accountable before they are able to understand salvation. I used to think there was no scriptural proof for this belief, but there is:

✔ When God refused to let the unbelieving generation of Israelites enter the Promised Land, he said “your children who do not yet know good from bad--they will enter the land” (Deuteronomy 1:39).

Isaiah 7:16 explains that certain events will happen before a particular child “knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right.”

✔ God told Jonah he spared Nineveh because of the 120,000 “who cannot tell their right hand from their left.” Bible scholars believe this referred to the children in that city of approximately 600,000 (Jonah 4:11, Commentary).

When David's son died in 2 Samuel 12:23, David said, Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.

Men and women are sent to hell because “they refused to love the truth and so be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:10). See also Romans 1:32. Before a child can comprehend the truth, he can neither accept nor reject it.

Because of Adam's sin, no one is born "good."(1) Young children don't "deserve" salvation, but God graciously saves those too young to choose for themselves.

Footnote:
(1) Most of the secular world wrongly believes that we are born good. They blame bad parenting or bad circumstances for making a person do bad things. Scripture teaches that we are born fallen and our natural instinct is to sin. That's why we need a Savior. Nothing in a person's environment or experiences forces him/her to sin. Joseph is a good example of this truth. He had every excuse to become a criminal, but he became a great man of God. See Bad Blood. Ruth is another example. See Ruth Beat the Odds.

  1. I always think of 2 Samuel 12:22 And he said, “While the child was alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who can tell whether the Lord will be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ 23 But now he is dead; why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I SHALL GO TO HIM, BUT HE SHALL NOT RETURN TO ME.”

  2. I believe this includes some adults with intellectual disabilities also. God is good. God is merciful.

  3. We miscarried a baby when our son was 2yr9mo old. He was angry with God for taking the baby he had been praying for. When I explained that God decided the baby would be safer with Him, our son accepted that, and got past his anger. We were so relieved!

    1. You handled that very wisely. I'm sorry for your loss, but it's a comfort to know you shall see your child one day.

  4. God is good. Thank you for this. Also, this would include those who are born mentally disabled and don’t know right from wrong, correct? :)
