Premarital Excuses

Christians think nothing of having premarital sex, but they'd feel differently if they read 1 John 3:6. This 1-minute devotion explains. #BibleLoveNotes #Bible #Devotions

Statistics show that 80% of Christians have premarital sex and many live together before marriage. (source)

Some ex-vangelicals are advocating the approval of premarital sex to free Christians from what they consider "unnecessary shame."

Suppose someone told you that shoplifting was a modern option for Christians who want things they can’t afford, and no one should make you feel ashamed if you shoplift.

That statement is no more absurd than claiming Christians should be freed from the shame of premarital sex. In fact, it's less absurd according to Scripture:

“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.” 1 Corinthians 6:18

If your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, you’re defiling God’s name when you have sex outside of marriage, no matter how acceptable it seems to you (1 Corinthians 6:15).

Professing Christians who have sex outside of marriage may have a form of godliness, but they're denying God’s power in their lives (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

------------------

Note: There's an important distinction to make here: a genuine believer may fall into sin, i.e. have an immoral sexual encounter. But they will repent and seek counsel and accountability, avoiding situations that led to this sin. Scripture says, "No one who lives in him [Christ] keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him" (1 John 3:6). If you're asking how many times a genuine believer can fall into sin, you're asking the wrong question. Please examine yourself honestly (2 Corinthians 13:5).

Many people are claiming that premarital sex is not prohibited in Scripture. Others claim that premarital sex is appropriate for people who are engaged. If you want to see what Scripture says, check out today's Bite Size Bible Study: Clear Proof that Premarital Sex is Forbidden in Scripture

Bible Love Notes

  1. All sexual immorality is prohibited in the Bible, clearly and concisely, as it is abhorrent to God. The relationships we have with each other are reflections of the relationship we have with God. We are not only made in His image but every relationship we have with each other is an image of the relationship we were created for with Him. When we commit an act of immorality we do it to each other, ourselves and to God. Nothing is missed out on being sinned against.

Whether the sin is sex before marriage or, substantially worse, adultery, God has placed this as amoungst the sins He calls the worst and that run so close to being unforgiveable that we should never see them as anything less.

Adultery is directly akin to the same action that we as sinners commit against God with every sin we do. As someone who has had that done to me I have had the Holy Spirit reveal to me that the pain, suffering and sense of loss and visceral faithlessness is exactly how God feels at mankind's sinning against Him. My sin, as the same for all mankind, has caused pain to God that we should all be ashamed of to our very cores. The pain you feel if you have shown faithfulness, honour and loyalty to someone and they have taken that and thrown it in the garbage and defiled themselves with another causes a sense of loss and damage in every aspect of your being. You are attacked emotionally, mentally, physically, spiritually and through dishonour to the point were for some there is no recovery. God, through Love beyond all understanding, then turns around and offers forgiveness and a way to reconcile with Him. Praise God.

The world is assaulting us as never before with allowing sexual immorality to be treated as if it were nothing. It forgives the guilty, without repentance and often with them repeating the offence without remorse. The enemy is bringing this attitude into the Church because it destroys lives and can be used to destroy faith. Don't be surprised. God's Word said it would happen. Just don't accept it. Speak up about it. Remove the unrepentant and accept the remorseful penitent. Demonstrate real Love, as demonstrated by God, and accept nothing in your midst that causes you to stumble and sin against God and man. This isn't legalism it is obedience to the Gospel and Word of God. Anything less is sin heaped upon sin and all of it aimed at God.
