Claiming that Sin is No Big Deal

Is it right to ask this question? Yes and no. This 1-minute devotion explains.

A reader responded to a devotion about sexual sins saying, “God won't send you to hell for ignoring his commandments. If you accept him as your Lord and Savior, and confess your sins to him you're saved and you will go to heaven no matter how much you screw up.”

She’s right that no one goes to Hell for ignoring God’s commands.

They go to Hell for not believing in Jesus.

But one sign of unbelief is a lack of regard for God's commands.

A Christian is someone who loves Jesus.

Christians still sin, but they don’t ignore God’s commands because you can’t love Jesus and ignore His commands. It’s not possible (see verses below).

Jesus didn’t teach a permissive view of salvation. He said we must count the cost (Luke 14:25-34). We can’t earn salvation, but it always, always, always changes those who receive it. Genuine believers love Jesus and want to “live a life worthy” of Him (Ephesians 4:1).

How much can a genuine Christian sin? Only God knows the answer. But no one who loves Jesus wants to find out.

Scriptures that refute the belief that you can love Jesus without obeying Him:

1 John 5:4: everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

1 John 5:18: We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning; the One who was born of God protects him, and the evil one cannot touch him.

1 John 3:9: No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

1 John 2:29: If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.

1 John 3:6: No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him.

John 14:23: Jesus replied, Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

John 8:51: Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death.

John 14:15: If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

John 14:21: Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and reveal Myself to him.

John 14:24: Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words. The word that you hear is not My own, but it is from the Father who sent Me.

John 15:10: If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and remain in His love.

  1. Thank you this really helps me to overcome what I have been going through.

  2. This is very true. However, a TRUE believer does not sin comfortably. The Holy Spirit will convict them of their sin. I agree, you don't want to find out, standing before the Lord Your God on Judgement Day and hear Jesus say, "I never knew you". (Matthew 7:21-23)

    1. Carlos, I'm not sure what you are saying.
Perhaps I have misunderstood, but it sounds like you are saying that you are so much smarter than anyone who believes what this devotion teaches.

If you had a legitimate disagreement, that would be fine, especially if you could defend it with Scripture since this devotion is filled with relevant Scriptures that confirm the truths it contains. People without a legitimate basis for their beliefs tend to mock those who disagree with them.

  6. A genuine Christian can sin as much as they want. A child of God who has been born again does not sin at all. A child of God who has been born again, doesn't even consider searching for a loophole that would allow them to sin. The Holy Ghost is averse to sin and so are those who have been filled with Him. They are the only ones who are going to Heaven and they are the only ones who are pleasing God in their everyday life. Going 60mph in a 55 mph zone is not a sin. Crossing the street against the red light isn't either. Not sure what type of 'sin' the writer is claiming Christians still commit, but since "Christian" is nothing but a meaningless word, it doesn't matter. The writer is also incorrect about going to Hell. The person who ignores God's commandments does absolutely go the Hell. Why did God give us commandments if we don't have to obey them? You can't love Jesus without the Spirit of God in you. The Spirit of God loves God and does not disobey Him at-all.

    1. If you think you are perfect, isaac, you are greatly deceived. No one is perfect except God. Below are a few of the many Scriptures which explain that Christians still sin. But before we go there, I am wondering why you feel that you are able to judge what constitutes a sin on the highway. Where in Scripture does it say that disobeying the law a little bit is okay? Is it okay to steal if you steal less than $5? In addition, you have completely distorted the meaning of the devotion and criticized it without humility or grace. It is explaining that it isn't our good works that save us. It's our belief in Christ, and a result of our belief in Christ is our desire to obey Him. Your comment is neither humble, nor careful, nor kind. And I'd say that proves you aren't without sin.

Philippians 1:6: he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Paul said, "Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

1 John, written to Christians says, "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." 1:8-9
Matthew 18:15: "If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back."

Galatians 6:1: Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.

James 5:19-20: "My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, 20 you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back from wandering will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins."

1 Corinthians 5:12: "It isn't my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning."

If we do not keep His commandments He is not in us. I encourage each of you to read and discern by the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit, who teaches you all things and leads you into all truth and understanding. Search the scriptures and seek God. I'm Jesus' name, Amen
