What the Bible Teaches about Transgenderism

"God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them"
(Genesis 1:27; 5:2Mark 10:6).

Who would have thought this verse would become controversial?

If we truly have compassion for mankind, we'll accept Biblical teaching and pray for people trapped in the harmful sins of transgenderism(1) and transvestism.

Our gender is no accident:

Psalm 139:13-16: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb…Your eyes saw my unformed body..."

We damage our souls when we defy God's choices:

Isaiah 45:9: "What sorrow awaits those who argue with their Creator. Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, 'Stop, you're doing it wrong!'" (also Romans 9:20)

We have different personalities, interests, skills, and mannerisms. Not every man need be ruggedly masculine nor every woman lacy feminine. But God assigns gender, and He knows us better than we know ourselves (Psalm 139:1).

Transgenderism typically involves homosexuality and always involves acting as if we are another gender. Scripture warns that people who do either of these things have never turned their hearts to God:

1 Corinthians 6:9-10: “Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate [malakos], nor homosexuals [arsenokoitasis], nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.”

Malakos means men who intentionally act like women. Arsenokoitai means same-gender sexual activity.(1)

Revisionist gay teachers claim malakos and arsenokoitasis must be translated together to condemn
:

1. Homosexuals who role-play male-female sex roles; and/or
2. Homosexuals who sexually abuse others. In this explanation, they claim malakos refers to abused boys.

Neither of these arguments is legitimate:

1. The Greek does not combine malakos and arsenokoitis but condemns homosexuals and effeminate men separately.(2)  If we assume that the only homosexuals condemned are those who have sex with effeminate homosexuals, then we might just as logically assume that covetous people are only wrong when they participate with thieves. The Greek doesn't reflect this combining of sins.

2. If malakos are victims, God would never condemn them!

Scripture condemns transgender behavior (read more), and it also condemns homosexuality. Nowhere does it make exceptions for either. If this passage actually meant what revisionists claim, our all-wise God would have worded it to reflect that meaning because our sexual behavior is of utmost importance to God (1 Corinthians 6:18).

In addition, revisionist gay teachers generally approve of transgenderism, which further weakens their arguments. Why would God approve of transgenderism but condemn people born male who act like women?

(1)This devotion is not discussing ambiguous genitalia (atypical genitalia), which is a birth defect where a child is born with genitalia that are not clearly defined. This devotion is discussing people who are clearly born with male or female genitalia but claim they are meant to be the opposite sex or who claim they are neither or both male and female.

What Does the Bible Say About Transvestism?

As Christians, we know that the most powerful voice for any subject is Scripture. But there are also some strong voices in the secular world that still consider transgenderism a mental disorder that needs to be treated, not enabled. Perhaps they will be silenced as time goes on, but they are worth noting:

  1. I agree with whatever our Bible says and what Dr.'s say. My personal opinion is to have sympathy for those that are confused but to enable them is worse than telling the truth. There are many sicknesses of the mind and the ones that deal with sexual confusion can be difficult to approach.

  2. I believe what the Bible says and what the Dr.'s say. There are a lot of mental illnesses but ones that deal with sex can be very difficult to approach. I also think that to enable a sick person is very dangerous and needs to be approached with caution and with love but the main point is that it is not normal and needs to be treated with love and respect but it really needs to be addressed.

  3. Bottom line is ... God created us all with our unique bodies, minds and souls. God LOVES us. He alone knows every one of us by name, and calls us by name. God alone is the judge of sin. God ALONE is the judge.

    1. You are right that God created us, and that is why we trust His Word when it says that homosexuality and transvestism and transgender are not part of His design.

But you are wrong about God alone being the judge of sin and sinners. The Bible is full of commands for us to judge, discern, expose, rebuke, and correct sin and sinners.

In the end, God alone will send men and women to hell for ignoring His truths, but He has commanded us to warn them and help them see His truth.

To keep our mouths shut and let them continue in lifestyles and beliefs that will send them to hell is ungodly and unloving.

I love my Lord and my fellow man too much to watch them march to hell without so much as a warning.

      God's Word is extremely clear:

1 Corinthians 6:9-10: "Don't you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don't fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people--none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God."

2 Timothy 4:2: "Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction."

    2. God won't send you to hell for ignoring his commandments. If you accept him as your Lord and Savior, and confess your sins to him you're saved and you will go to heaven no matter how much you screw up.

    3. Grace,
That's a popular view, but it's not found in Scripture.

When someone becomes a Christian, they love Jesus and anyone who genuinely loves Jesus will not "ignore His commands." You're right that no one goes to hell for ignoring God's commands--they go to hell for not loving Jesus.

You cannot be a born-again Christian and ignore God's commands and choose to live a sinful lifestyle. Christians still sin, but they don't live in sin.

      Scripture says so:

      1 John 5:4
because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

      1 John 5:18
We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning; the One who was born of God protects him, and the evil one cannot touch him.

1 John 3:9: No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

      1 John 2:29
If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.

      1 John 3:6
No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him.

John 14:23: Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

      John 8:51
Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death."

      John 14:15
If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

      John 14:21
Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and reveal Myself to him."

      John 14:24
Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words. The word that you hear is not My own, but it is from the Father who sent Me.

      John 15:10
If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and remain in His love.
