“If you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat.” This popular statement is heard when someone wants to achieve something difficult but they refuse to take the first step necessary.
But we Christians know that's not altogether accurate.
In Matthew 14:28-31, Peter said, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” And Jesus said, “Come.”
Peter took the first step: “Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
Peter got out of the boat, with his eyes on the Lord and he walked on water, but as soon as he took his eyes off Christ and looked at the storm, he failed. He had good intentions but switched his focus from Christ to his circumstances.
I confess that's often my problem when I'm facing a difficulty. I can start out with faith but begin to have doubts. Isn't it nice that even when we momentarily fall into doubt, we can reach up for Christ's hand?
We need to get out of the boat when Christ calls us to do something, but we also need to keep our focus on the Lord.
