2 Step Process for Overcoming Anger

This 1-minute devotion offers 2 steps to overcoming anger.

Anger tends to be a common human problem, but it's a problem God wants us to overcome.

These two steps can help:

1. Ask God to give you His perspective on your anger or irritability.

We should be deeply concerned about our anger, never justifying or excusing it (James 4:1-10).

2. Dwell on Scripture.

Write down Bible passages that address anger and memorize or recite them daily, asking God to transform your mind and heart (Romans 12:1-2).

Remember that God promises to change our will and our actions when we get serious about our sins: Philippians 2:12-13.

So let's get serious!

  1. Anger, itself, is not a sin. Jesus got angry at the moneychangers in the temple and, yet, Jesus NEVER sinned. Anger, itself, is NOT a sin. Acting on anger incorrectly IS a sin. "Be angry and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath." Eph. 4:26

    1. Hi Karen.
You're right. There is a type of anger which is not sinful, to which Eph. 4:26 refers. It might be typified by being angry because someone is mistreated or because God's laws are treated without regard.

And there is a type of anger which is sinful to which this devotion refers and the Scriptures below also refer to it:

"My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires." James 1:19-20

"Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice." Ephesians 4:31-32

If actions were all that mattered, God would not tell us to make our thoughts obedient to Christ. He would simply tell us to make our actions obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

In Matthew 5:21-22, Jesus also makes this point:
“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.

Most people have a problem with sinful anger, not righteous anger. I hope this clarifies the differences.

  4. Thanks Miss Gail. I truely appreciate you exspounding on what the Bible exegetically tells us about the above anger. I have a colleague who is having a hard time with anger. It is paralyzing their relationships with others.

  5. I was disappointed though that you would choose to have a misleading line. I know you explained that Anger is not a sin but if people who are not saved or baby Christians read the caption...not good...Very misleading. Anger is an emotion from God to let us know something is wrong. Its what we DO about our anger that causes us to sin. Its just frustrating when christian leaders but a "bait" out with a very wrong title. Be careful.

    1. Hi Kirsten,
I never explained that anger is not sin.

Anger can be 100% sin depending on why we get angry.

Some anger is not sin (righteous anger, anger out of love for God or mankind), but most anger is sinful. We rarely get angry for the right reasons.

Most human anger is selfish, stubborn, arrogant, and ungodly.

God tells us in Matthew 5 that it's not just our actions that are sinful but our thoughts as well.

Scripture addresses anger in many, many passages. Only one passage addresses righteous anger.

  6. I read the scripture but still...its IF you remain angry. Initial anger is NOT sin.

    1. Kirsten,

These and other passages address anger as sinful:

"Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice." Ephesians 4:31-32

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment." Matthew 5:21-22

      Scripture doesn't support your view.
