Compound Sentences

This 1-minute devotion offers an interesting look at Paul's use of compound sentences.

Paul often used compound sentences.

He explained what was going on from two perspectives.

Sometimes I miss the second perspective.

Here's an example:

"We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed."
" We are perplexed, but not driven to despair."
" We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God."
" We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed."
2 Corinthians 4:8-9

We can dwell on what's going on: "We're suffering with many trails, perplexed, hunted, and knocked down. period."

BUT the most important truths are after the "buts": "We are not crushed, not driven to despair, not destroyed, and never abandoned by God."

If we only use simple sentences (i.e. only talk and think about what's going on), we can expect to be discouraged and defeated.

If we want peace and strength, we must speak in compound sentences.
