Being Careful Not to Drift Away—Hebrews 2:1

Hebrews 2 tells us to be careful not to drift away from Christ. This 1-minute devotion offers 5 Ways to prevent it. #BibleLoveNotes #Bible

Artist Salvador Dali claimed that mini-naps (less than a minute long) restored and refreshed his creativity.

To ensure he didn't drift into a deep sleep, Dali held a key in his hand, placed a plate on the floor below it, and fell asleep. When the key dropped from his hand and clanged against the plate, he'd wake up.

The slipping key alone might have awakened Dali, but he added the plate as a safeguard.

This is a good analogy for being spiritually awake:

“We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away (Hebrews 2:1).

Careful attention means we don't simply trust ourselves to stay alert. We add these “keys” to wake us up should we begin to drift:

1. Reading God's Word (James 1:25)
2. Obeying what we read (James 1:22-24)
3. Having regular Christian fellowship (Hebrews 10:24-25)
4. Studying the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15)
5. Being faithful in prayer (Philippians 4:4-7)

Take time today to make sure you have these keys in hand.

A great devotional!!
I encourage you to read the four one-minute devotions in The Parable of the Sower Series.

If you own Wisdom for Life, Day 25 offers additional insights about staying spiritually alert.

If you don't own Wisdom for Life, this is a great time to buy it for Thanksgiving or Christmas gifts. Consider using it for family devotions.

  3. Thank you for this. I have been richly fed by your posts!
I have a question. Is there a difference I am missing between #1 Reading God’s Word James 1:25 and #5 Bible study 2 Tim 2:15?
    Thank you!

    1. Hi Amie,
I do think there's a difference and I think we are supposed to do both. We always get something from reading Scripture, but it's good to go beyond reading to studying - looking at the background, context, word meanings, and complimentary passages to get a full understanding of Scripture.
