The Psalmists Teach Us How to Praise God by Giving Him Fitting Names

The Psalmists teach us how to praise our wonderful God. This devotion discusses the praiseworthy names the psalmists give God.

Most modern Christians—me included—fail to praise God as He deserves. That's one of many reasons we should read the Psalms. They have so much to teach us about praise.

One of the ways the psalmists praise God is by giving Him names that describe His character.

For example, in Psalm 24:10 David calls God “the Lord Almighty … the King of glory.” In Psalm 27:1 he calls him “my light and my salvation … the stronghold of my life.” Then in Psalm 28, David calls God my Rock … my strength and my shield … a fortress of salvation.

No words can fully describe our wonderful God, but the psalmists did their best to glorify Him by giving Him names that described His character.

Why not read through the Psalms and keep a list of names used for God. You might consider using some of these names in your prayers as reminders of God's faithfulness in your own life.

If you need some inspiration, listen to "Powerful Praise"  and read the one-minute devotion Are You Wearing Praise Today?

If you have my book Wisdom for Life, Day 32 adds meaning to this devotion.
