Was the Apostle Thomas from Missouri?

It's tongue and cheek to say that the Apostle Thomas was from Missouri, but this 1-minute devotion will show you why there's some truth in it.

In 1899, Missouri Congressman Willard Vandiver grew tired of his colleagues' rhetoric and declared that people from Missouri had to be shown things to believe them. Thus Missouri became unofficially known as the "Show Me State."(1)

The Apostle Thomas would have been a good Missourian. He said he wouldn't believe Christ was alive unless he put his hands in the scars on Christ's body.

Jesus allowed Thomas this proof. "Then Jesus told him, 'Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'" (John 20:24-29

Hebrews 11, the Bible's premier passage on faith, defines faith as "being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

If we understood everything that happens and saw every reward and punishment immediately, we'd never develop faith.

Are you confused about something in your life? Have faith and be among those Christ calls blessed.

(1) There are several legends as to why Missouri is called the "show me state," but this is the most believable (source).

  1. Thank you Gail, this is perfect when we keep in mind that a New Year is about to start, where we should hope for many blessings He has for us, although we have no evidence of them. I am hoping and in faith I will be waiting.
Happy New Year to you dear Gail, keep blessing us with your God given wisdom!
