As Christians, we are facing new challenges, so let me offer a very practical way to prepare our hearts for the battles we face.
We can learn from the “great cloud of witnesses” who've gone before us, those who were faithful and victorious in times of great evil.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3
You can study the lives of some of these heroes online, but I love reading about them in books where I can underline and write notes in the margins.
I read about many of these heroes of the faith when I was a new Christian, and they hugely impacted my faith. But I've forgotten some of the lessons I learned, so I've pulled their books off my bookshelf and started rereading them. It's been refreshing and inspiring.
As we face new challenges to our faith, those who obeyed, suffered, and persevered can cheer us on.

Corrie Ten Boom’s Tramp for the Lord has been especially meaningful to my husband and me, encouraging us that no matter how bad things get in our world, God will be with us. If you've never read The Hiding Place, please do. It will inspire you to know how our God can work through the worst of trials. For a brief summary of Corrie's life, you can read about it online: Profiles in Faith.
Note: I get no reimbursement for recommending these books. But I know they have helped build my faith, so I want to recommend them.

That's an interesting way to look at what a great cloud of witnesses means. I've always looked at it like all the people around us are witnessing our speech, our actions, and attitudes etc
ReplyDeleteThank you for your daily Bible studies!! They are most helpful! 👏🏻♥️🙏🏻
The reason the "cloud of witnesses" is usually considered past Christian examples is because it follows Hebrews 11 which lists many examples of Old Testament believers whose testimony speaks to us today. But you are not wrong to think that we also have people in our churches, family, workplace, etc. who are like this: witnessing to us by their lives and giving us strength to persevere. We need both!

ReplyDeleteHi Diane, I'm not sure why but your comments are not coming up in regular format. But the reason you didn't see them immediately is because the blog allows me to approve of comments before they are published, so I don't have people leave ads or profanity or mean-spirited comments.
