Make Sure You're Spiritually "Street Smart"

When we lived in Budapest we had no car, so we walked or rode public transportation. 

Budapest is a relatively safe city, but we listened to the locals about areas to avoid after dark. And we tried to remain alert to our surroundings. Something seemingly insignificant could signal danger.

This is a good analogy for our spiritual walk in this dark world. We listen to God’s Word, checking all teachings against it, and carefully avoiding errors that may seem insignificant at first glance. 

We understand that pleasing the Lord means exposing the darkness, not accepting it:

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” Ephesians 5:8-11

Because we no longer live in darkness, we reject anything that disguises, redefines, or downplays the light of God's Word (1 Thessalonians 5:5).

Yes! We have an awesome responsibility but it's one we love, so let's be “street smart” in our Christian walk.

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
