God's Wrath May Be Out of Style, but It's Not Out of the Picture

We may not like talking about God's wrath, but it's an essential part of the gospel for the reason explained in this devotion.

Psalm 76 begins by praising God who is “renowned” and “radiant with light” and goes on to say, “It is you alone who are to be feared. Who can stand before you when you are angry?

“…when you are angry.”

Modern man has denied this truth, imagining that God is never angry, always smiling His approval even if we defy His loving, purposeful commands.

But a good God could never approve of people damaging their souls.

When we choose sin, we defy and mock the Lord. And whether we want to believe it or not, that makes God angry:

“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” Romans 1:18-21

When people and nations suppress the truth, they can expect to be punished because our God is good, holy, and loving, and He hates evil.
