Why Pray for People in Authority

When you read passages about praying for leaders, be sure you understand these facts!

This is not a political statement:

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior.” 1 Timothy 2:1-3

When Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, they were living in the Roman Empire, ruled by the Emperor Nero. Nero was not only ungodly, he did things that led to increased persecution of believers.(1)

Politics may be partisan, but prayer is not. God doesn't command us to pray for a particular political party. We need to be praying for good and bad leaders.

We also have a responsibly to pray for those in authority in our churches. We need pastors and teachers who firmly embrace biblical values because "righteousness exalts a nation" (Proverbs 14:34).

Are you praying for those in authority?

See Practical Prayer Prompts for an easy, practical way to remember leaders in prayer.

  1. Thanks for the timely reminder, definitely something I need to work on! I have been deeply saddened, even depressed and confused about political and societal current events. My reaction has been to refrain from watching news to protect myself emotionally, an out of sight out of mind process. God is so merciful and full of power, I need to intwrcede with prayer!
