False Confidence & False Guilt

Scripture Explains two errors we can have: false confidence or false fears about salvation.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1

But what does it mean to be a child of God?

1 John 3 tells us that true children of God refuse to be habitual sinners. They seek to have a clean conscience, confessing and repenting of their sins and genuinely loving their brothers and sisters in Christ.

People tend to deceive themselves in two ways:

1. Thinking that once we're forgiven our sins don't matter.
Not true.
Scripture tells us that saved people care deeply about our sins (John 14:21Romans 2:13Romans 61 John 3:6-10).

2. Doubting God’s grace and forgiveness when we’re genuinely seeking to follow Christ.

Satan likes to remind Christians of past sins making us doubt our forgiveness. He also gives us vague feelings of unworthiness. When God convicts us of sin, it's constructive and purposeful (2 Corinthians 7:9-10).

1 John 3 assures us that if we belong to the Lord, it won't simply be words we speak at an altar call—it will be part of our hearts, our minds, and our actions (1 Corinthians 4:20). We won't be perfect, but we'll be actively seeking to please the Lord, turning from our sins (Ephesians 5:10).
