Small children can't cut straight. Their little fingers don't have the dexterity to correctly handle a pair of scissors.
Likewise, new Christians have difficulty cutting straight through truth and error. They don't have the spiritual dexterity needed.
Unfortunately, some Christians never gain that dexterity:
“I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly--mere infants in Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:1-15
But 2 Timothy 2:15 has the solution:
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
The Greek word for “rightly dividing” means cutting straight. Some suggest Paul used this term because he was a tent-maker and knew the importance of cutting straight pieces and fitting them together in proper order.
Maturity in Christ requires spiritual dexterity to accurately cut through truth and error, fitting God's words together correctly, seeing the Bible as a whole, not crooked fragments taken out of context.
Let's cut straight!
