Give and Gain, Keep and Lose

This 1-minute devotion addresses stinginess and generosity, and how it applies to non-financial situations. #BibleLoveNotes #Bible

I have a confession. I used to be a stingy daughter-in-law. I rarely gave my in-laws the benefit of the doubt.

I wasn’t generous to praise their good qualities.

I made minimal attempts to develop our relationship. (If you’re single, keep reading—this isn't really about in-laws.)

Eventually, the Lord helped me realize that I wasn’t treating them the way I would want to be treated, and He helped me change.

As I did, I grew to appreciate them (a lot!). Our relationship grew larger, more loving, and more real, and my life grew richer.

Proverbs 11:24 says, “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”

Generosity makes us richer in character and love.

Stinginess makes us small, poor, and selfish.

Are there areas of your life where you’re being stingy?

Take time today to pray about this.

    1. HI Peakaboos,
If the person you're talking about isn't family, then by all means move on. If, however, you are talking about a parent or sibling, things are different.

For one thing, the Scripture you quote about wiping the dust from your feet is about missionaries sent to share the Gospel with people who reject them (Matthew 10:14). It's not about personal relationships. If the relationship you're talking about is a parent, God has an even higher standard.

God asks us to do the hard things because doing the hard things keeps us from becoming like those you describe.

The world tells us to give up. God tells us to persevere. Whether the other person changes or not, we can show our love for God by our actions and refine our faith.
