Whose Heart Desires - The Meaning of Psalm 37:4

When Scripture promises to give us the desires of our hearts, it prefaces it by the condition for that promise. This 1-minute devotion explains. #BibleLoveNotes #Bible

I saw "Ps.37:4" on a Jaguar license plate.

"Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4

It’s nice that the Jaguar owner acknowledged all things in life are blessings from God, but owning a sports car isn't the point of this verse.

Two decades ago when my husband was in the Army, we received orders for an undesirable assignment in an undesirable location. We were disappointed, but as we talked and prayed about it, we began to see God’s hand in it. And we actually got excited! God had replaced our heart desires with His heart desires.

And that’s the promise in this verse—first we delight ourselves in the Lord, in His plans, His thoughts, and His purposes. Then we receive the desires of our heart...because our desires become His desires.

There's nothing wrong with owning a sports car, but Psalm 37:4 is about changing our desires to God's desires. It's not about selfish gain.

This truth is confirmed in Matthew 16:24 and 1 John 2:15-17

  1. This is so true, God gives us His desires in our heart, I have had that happen many times in my life.

    2. Very true. And once He changes our desires, we discover that the new desires that He implanted in us are so much better than what we once desired!

    4. I agree and I might add..He also brings us to a place to be "satisfied". When the stuff isn't important and it's just more of him we want..more of His presence, then we are growing in him.
