Don't Give Me What I Deserve!

If we're wise, we will never ask God to give us what we deserve. This 1-minute devotion explains.

If you watch some of the popular television shows about house hunting or home improvement, you're bound see people who think they deserve the best of everything, even young couples who are just starting out.

We all have this problem from time to time, thinking we're entitled to the best of everything, feeling sorry for ourselves if things aren't easy for us.

I thought about my parents' first home, a single-wide trailer. They lived in it for years, saving money until they could afford a house. And they were grateful for what they had.

But times have changed. Culture tells us we deserve the best of everything, and sometimes we Christians get caught up in this lie (1 John 2:15).

But we should know better because we understand that we deserve Hell, and only through the grace of God do we get Heaven—something we don't deserve (Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8).

That puts every hardship, challenge, and sacrifice on earth in perspective. When we begin to feel entitled, we can remember our "forever home" with the Lord because nothing compares to its perfection and joy.

  1. I love what you said here. We live in a small cottage in the country. It was a fixer upper when we bought it, but we are slowly fixing and repairing and making it home. When we think of how 80 percent of the world lives in poverty and so many people (even here in the USA) sleep on the ground or in tents, cardboard boxes and crowded shelters . . . well, we feel totally blessed. Having a bed, with clean sheets and blankets is a blessing not to be taken for granted. How abundantly blessed we are.

    1. Amen!
I often remember that much of the world is without warm water when I take a shower or bath. What a luxury!
And, Connie, I think we appreciate our home more when we save for it and work on it. At least that's been my experience.
