Someone Always Gets Hurt

We may think that our sins don't matter as long as we're having fun, and not hurting anyone else. This 1-minute devotion exposes that myth.

Years ago while vacationing, my husband and I were awakened at 1 a.m. by drunken laughter.
The people in the room next to ours obviously felt like they could party without bothering anyone. They were wrong.

That reminds me of a common explanation people use to excuse their sins: "It's no one's business what I do privately. I'm not hurting anyone."

But the truth is this: Whenever we violate God's commands, even if we don't disturb our neighbors, we hurt ourselves.

Disobedience affects our well-being because "the law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes" (Psalm 19:7-8).

Understanding and obeying God's commands brings refreshment, wisdom, joy, and light into our lives. It's the only way we can truly walk in "freedom" (Psalm 119:45).

I encourage you to read 3 Common Excuses to Sin. It will give you a deeper understanding of this subject.

Drunkenness is addressed in the New Testament in Ephesians 5:18 and Galatians 5:19-21.

  2. {Kathy} Moral relativism has penetrated every aspect of our culture. The rationalization of all behavior as something that only affects the person doing it is crazy. It's all about the self, the ego and the need for instant gratification at all costs.

  3. This is so true. Many people don't want to be confronted with the truth, especially if it means a needed change (which it usually does!).
