Hearts vs. Faces

Samuel, a godly man, emphasized a man's looks. This 1-minute devotion explains what God has to say about outward appearance.

The Wall Street Journal reports that "good-looking people are favored for hiring and they earn higher salaries than their less-attractive colleagues."

Isn't it ironic that we humans, made in the image of God, focus so much on aspects of humanness that aren't important to God?

Even the godly Samuel thought God would choose David's tall, attractive brother for king. But God doesn't judge anyone by outward appearance.

"But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'" (1 Samuel 16:7)

God looks at our motives:

"All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD." (Proverbs 16:2)

He looks at our actions:

"I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve." (Jeremiah 17:10)

He looks at compromise in our lives:

"If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?" (Psalm 44:20-21)

We don't choose the beauty of our outward appearance. But we definitely choose the beauty of our hearts. And drawing closer to the Lord is the most effective "beauty treatment."

  1. Hi Gail, I am very grateful God judges by the heart, although sometimes mine is very black, sigh! It is a great way to make us keep doing heart checks though.
    God bless

  2. Some years back, I wrote an editorial on this subject. So much talent gets overlooked, because we're programmed to look at the outward appearance. It's shameful.
