A Practical Method for Overcoming Sin

Powerful. Practical. Purposeful. This 1-minute devotion suggests a practical way to let God's Word help us overcome sins in our lives. #Bible #BibleLoveNotes

"I can't change!"

Ever felt that way?

Years ago I discovered a way that helps me deal with specific sins in my life.

I believe it will work for anyone who does it wholeheartedly out of love for the Lord (Colossians 3:23).

Here's what I do: I look for Scriptures dealing with a sin I'm struggling to overcome, write pertinent verses on 3x5 cards, and go over the verses daily, meditating on their truth. Sometimes I go over them two to three times throughout the day.

This might sound simplistic, but it works because the Bible is alive and active and able to penetrate our hearts and minds (Hebrews 4:12)

God's Word will always accomplish its purposes in our lives. It judges us when we refuse to repent, and it changes us when we submit to its truth (Isaiah 55:10-11).

I can't change myself. But God's Spirit and His Word can change me. When I actively seek that change, I show my love for the Lord (John 14:21).

Here are a few examples:

If you have a problem with anger, meditate on these verses: Psalm 37:8; Ephesians 4:26-27; Proverbs 16:32

Fear & worry: 1 Peter 5:7; Matthew 6:30-34; Philippians 4:6-7; Matthew 11:28-30.

Lack of self-control: Proverbs 25:28; 2 Peter 1:5-10.

  2. Wonderful suggestion! As it says in Psalms 119:11 "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." So meditating on Scriptures that have to do with a particular weakness is a great way to get His Word in there.

Also wanted to say that "Making Your Home Sing Monday" linky is live and ready for your posts. Love to have you join us again!

  3. Hi Gail, I am one who loves practical advice and this is that. I have my cards and I am going to give "trying to keep quiet" Scriptures a try. Thanks for always encouraging us.

  9. In my first 50 years I was in the church. They never explained what sin was, namely 1 John 3:4. Sin is falling short of the torah, the word of Yahuah. They never said on Sunday morning, how to keep the sabbath, Saturday.
Yahuah Said, "my people keep my Sabbaths" By not keeping it we were not his people.
The last 20 years I've been keeping his Sabbath to be one of his people. My life has been blessed.

    1. Allen, I have prayed for you.

In your previous comment on another devotion, you said that Paul was not a Christian and the books in the Bible which he wrote are lies.

If you believe that, then you also believe that the Apostle Peter was a liar because he called Paul’s letters Scripture and he said only ignorant and unstable people distort Paul’s letters:

“Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.” 2 Peter 3:15-16

And, If you believe that Peter was a liar, you also believe that Christ was a liar because He said,
“I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”

You are part of a cult that is following the same lies that Paul described in several of his letters when he was under the inspiration of God’s Spirit, so I can see why your cult must reject Paul, but in the process, you also are rejecting the words of Peter and Jesus.

Yes, Paul speaks directly about the cult you are following (Galatians 2:10-14; 4:9-11; Romans 14:5, etc.)

Your cult believes the Jesus died for no reason, but Jesus explains that died to fulfill the laws you are trying to keep. He didn’t abolish them, He fulfilled them by His sacrifice, bringing us into the New Covenant where God’s Spirit indwells us through our belief and enables us to say no to ungodliness (Matthew 5:17).
John 1:17: “For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”

I won't continue to argue with you since it's clear that you are not listening and your whole purpose is to spread your false gospel. But I will pray for you that you will find the truth that sets you free from the law of sin and death. Romans 8:2
