Two All Beef Patties...

Scripture memory, memorizing ad jingles
“Put to the test, Americans recalled the seven ingredients of a McDonald's Big Mac hamburger and members of TV's "The Brady Bunch" more easily than the Bible's Ten Commandments.”(1)

Our memories are incredible. We memorize things throughout our lives without even trying—sights, smells, sounds, names, places, phone numbers, songs...

We unconsciously memorize whatever we hear repeatedly.

Without looking it up, I know a Big Mac has "two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.” I don’t even like Big Macs, but I’ve memorized the ingredients from McDonald’s ads.

I’ve memorized Scripture too, but what is my brain most filled with…valuable words of God or empty trivia like fast food ingredients and TV actors?

Today take time to think about what’s feeding your memory and decide to fill it with words that bring joy and light (Psalm 19:8).

  4. We may resist memorizing scripture, but having it in our well helps refresh when we are down and dispirited, or searching for words to help others.
A great reminder on a simple and important subject. Thanks for sharing at NOBH!
