What Happened to Our Attention Spans?

Bible, Quiet Time, Attention spans
Did you know that Television viewing lowers our attention spans? TV entertains us with constant, fast-paced changes that require no more than a few seconds of concentration at a time. According to one study, “in a typical hour…viewers’ attention is forced to shift over eight hundred times.”(1)

Television also “promotes a spectator mentality”(1), requiring no imagination or critical thinking skills.

This may be one reason that we have trouble concentrating on God’s Word and prayer, and one reason we have trouble discerning right from wrong.

Romans 12:2,3 (NLT) says: "Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do."

We need daily doses of God’s Love Notes. Will you join me today as I pray to be more diligent to “transform and renew” my mind in God’s Word?

  1. Wow - great post!! We didn't have a TV growing up and we were so creative as kids. Seriously - what we couldn't dream up to do wasn't worth thinking about. Our friends would come over and ask, "Where's your TV?????" And we'd tell them that we didn't have one. Then the confusing question, "What do you do all day?????" I'd always tell them that we were so busy having fun we didn't have time for a TV. They had trouble comprehending that. But funny thing - our neighborhood friends hung out at our home all day...and in the evenings my parents would have to literally force them to go home so we could go to bed. :) Z and I strictly control what Robi watches - we are very careful even about what we watch...its influence on our morals, behavior and thought processes is subtle and very powerful.
