Menu Placemats

When we travel in foreign countries, I love to collect the give-away menus and fast-food tray liners.

But I wanted to enjoy them instead of keeping them in a box in the closet. So I decided to make them into place-mats. I bought some "peel & stick clear laminate" which is similar to contact paper but slightly stiffer.

I cut the paper to fit with a slight overlap, and I covered both sides. The one I'm working on in this picture is from Ghiradelli's Disney World.

With both sides covered in the laminate, I trimmed the edges with a small border of laminate. You could use a laminating machine for this, but you need oversize laminate sheets, which is expensive. The laminate paper is about $5 a roll and will do 15-20 menus. But it isn't as stiff as regular laminate.

Here's a few of the finished place-mats: from top to bottom, German, Russian, Hungarian and Turkish McDonald tray liners.

Please take a look at my post about my Menu Wall decor above my Kitchen Booth. It will give you a look at my full menu collection and maybe some ideas.

  1. Wow! What a smart idea! I recently took a little day trip with my dad, we rode a historic train up to a nearby gold-rush town and did sight seeing. I have a few paper mementos from the trip and I think I will make them into a placemat.
What a nice way to preserve memories without keeping them hidden in a box!

    1. I wish you could find it. If you can get clear contact paper, it would work too. The laminate is slightly stiffer, but contact paper would work.

  3. WOW that's a really great idea! I collect all sorts of things when we travel and am always wondering what to do with them. Now I'm going to be on the look out for something place mat sized so I can do this too. It would be so fun to eat a meal and be reminded of good times on vacation. Thank you for sharing with us on A Crafty Soiree!
