Without God's help, we're lousy at loving others. I'm not talking simply about romantic relationships, but love for our family, friends, and neighbors as well.
In Philippians 1:9-11 Paul prays that the Philippians love for God will grow, abound, overflow. That's a good prayer for all of us to pray for ourselves. Then, as our love for God grows, our love for others grows as well.
It helps us live out the instructions in Philippians 2:3-4:
1. Do nothing for selfish reasons.
2. Be humble.
3. Value others.
4. Look out for the interests of others, not just your own.
Genuine love isn't automatic--it means working through problems even when things get messy, seeing things from the perspective of others, being committed and proactive.
Are you having difficulty in some of your relationships? Why not pray the prayer in Philippians 1:9-11. As you grow in God's love, you will automatically grow in your love for others.
